Assassin's Creed: Odyssey Gameplay Impressions

This may have gotten lost in the hype of the Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay, but a few days ago Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey released some gameplay footage of their own. The footage shown was of a high level questline devoted to finding and killing the mythical Medusa, who apparently, is not so mythical. You can watch the footage over on theRadBrad’s channel here.

After watching, there’s some really great things going on in this gameplay. Combat honestly looks cleaner and more interesting than it was in Origins. There’s the introduction of more powerful abilities, and overall there is just more creativity involved in fighting abilities. These skills look to be borderline spells, and I like the line the game seems to be walking between realism and myth. It appears as if the development team took inspiration from God of War and went with a more mystical interpretation of history in general. Which….honestly I’m all for. Ancient Greece has such a great religious history with tons of pretty famous myths which a lot of modern day folks are pretty familiar with. So being able to fight creatures like the Medusa is going to be a fun time and I can't wait to see what other monsters and creatures they implement into the game. I’ll say the other positive I saw throughout the gameplay is the region design in general. They look detailed and fleshed out, and certainly the final region (I believe called ‘the petrified forest’) looks interesting, different, and spooky af. I’m looking forward to more regions that blur myth and realism!

In terms of items that are sort of neutral, the one I’ll note is that there looks to be a lot of similarities between Origins and Odyssey. This is not necessarily a good or bad thing, it’s just something to note. The scanning mechanic, ship sailing, loot system--these all look basically the same as in Origins.

On the unfortunate side, it seems as if the scanning mechanic is just there to be spammed. In general I feel if a game requires you to spam a “mechanic,” then it’s just not a good mechanic (cough, looking at you ‘build mechanic’ in Fortnite). The other con for me right now seems to be the chat “choices” that you have with NPCs. While something I was originally pretty excited about, it sort of seems like there’s actually no choices involved; just options to give you more lore. I hope that maybe some of these things affect the trajectory of the story, but throughout this gameplay it appears they just are additional chat options, which is a bit lacking for me.

Overall, I’m looking forward to Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and hope that some more gameplay footage comes out as we get closer to release date!
