Leaked Harry Potter RPG Looks Fantastic

Chances are that, if you’re a fan of the Harry Potter series, you’ve likely dreamed about what it would be like to get your owl from Hogwarts. You may have even taken the Sorting Hat and Wand Finder quizzes on Pottermore. While you unfortunately have to resign yourself to being a Muggle in the real world (probably), leaked footage of an alleged Harry Potter RPG hints that you may be able to live out your Wizarding World dreams after all.

The video appeared on the gaming subreddit early Tuesday morning, showcasing about a minute’s worth of various game footage, such as character creation, exploration, and combat. It was quickly pulled from Youtube at the request of Warner Brothers, which only lends it more credibility. The fact that the video is slightly blurry and at an angle - obviously someone capturing another screen on their phone - further indicates that this is a real game and not a fan creation or hoax. As of this writing, the video can still be viewed here.

Accompanying the video on reddit was the following description (also since deleted), which seems to jive with what we see in the footage:

Set in the 19th Century (1800's) Wizarding World, this 3rd person open-world action RPG game centers around your character with unique abilities who has earned a late acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You are a newly arrived 5th year student to Hogwarts that demonstrates a latent gift for magic with a unique ability to track and identify remnants of a potent ancient power.

Upon arrival, strange events begin to materialize In the Forbidden Forest and trouble begins to brew within the castle walls. Together with Professor Elezar Fig, you embark on a journey through both familiar and never before seen locations to bring to light the truth behind these mysterious occurrences.

On your quest you will craft potions, master new spells, and discover fantastical beasts. You will battle Dark Wizards, Goblins, and other supernatural enemies and uncover the truth about your destiny - the Fate of the Wizarding World lies in your hands.

Some fans may be disappointed that they won’t get to interact with series favorites like Hagrid or the Weasley twins, but I think the 19th century setting is a smart move. Occurring long before the Death Eaters began their reign of terror, this time frame gives developers the opportunity to tell their own story in the Harry Potter universe, largely unconstrained by the canonical events of the books and films. Recognizable locales like the Forbidden Forest, Diagon Alley, and the Great Hall are certain to evoke a sense of familiarity and nostalgia, and I think it’s likely that players may encounter members of famous Pureblood families like the Blacks and Malfoys throughout their journey.

The video footage appears to be of actual gameplay (at what stage of development is uncertain), showcasing the player character using spells to combat goblins, solve puzzles, and explore. While it’s unclear just how truly open the world will be - can you skip classes to run around Hogsmeade? Can you get kicked out of Hogwarts for this? - the short glimpse provided in the video suggests that there will be plenty for players to see and do in the game.

After the disastrous, micro-transaction riddled Harry Potter and the Hogwarts Mystery, this unnamed, unannounced role-playing-game almost seems too good to be true. The world of Harry Potter, with its rich lore and massive fanbase, seems like a no-brainer for a AAA gaming release. I’m not sure why it took so long, but I’m eagerly looking forward to it.
