Spider-Man SDCC 2018 Trailer: Ombra Reacts
We are now just over a month away from the highly anticipated release of Spider-Man on the Playstation 4. At E3, Sony surprised me by closing out their showcase with a feature on the masked web slinger. Using Spider-Man in the main event slot worked out for the best as the extended trailer ended on a doozy of a cliffhanger. Since E3 we have all been wondering who exactly showed up at the end, leaving our protagonist with a shocked expression. While we thankfully do not get a firm answer in the trailer from San Diego Comic Con, we are given a few more clues that could satisfy the theory that the Green Goblin is our mystery villain.
The trailer begins with Peter questioning what has happened to his city in an exhausted tone. His question is met with an even more morose response from Yuri of "feels like the end of the world...maybe it is." This paints a picture of a shattered New York City that's on the brink of complete destruction. Norman Osborn, in his re-election bid for Mayor, is using the fear of his citizens as a way to attack Spider-Man on political grounds. He's hired Silver Sable, who makes her debut in this trailer, and her security force as a way to enforce an extreme version of martial law. We hear that she's been ordered to "shoot [Spider-Man] on sight." A win-at-all-costs attitude is nothing new for Norman Osborn which leads me to believe the unveiling of Green Goblin is exactly what spooked Spider-Man back in June.
While I am convinced that it is the Green Goblin who shows up, I'm not convinced it's Norman Osborn. Norman doesn't hide his contempt for Spider-Man in the least. He's actually painting Spidey as the bad guy in an effort to win votes from a terrified population. With all this obvious resentment I don't believe Peter would be truly shocked to see Norman reveal himself at the end of the E3 showcase. He already knows that Norman is the head of Oscorp so he has access to the type of technology the Goblin would be using, and with Norman basically hiring a hit squad, Peter knows he wants Spider-Man out of the equation. Not only would Peter not be as shocked as he appeared to be, I don't think Norman would truly get his hands dirty. This iteration of his the character strikes me as the type to delegate the real gritty work to others as a way to keep his image clean. What wouldn't be beneath him, however, is to pawn the task of squashing the spider off onto someone close to him. After seeing how many others fail to take down Spider-Man, Norman needs someone he can trust to finish the job. Who is this person, you may ask?
Think about it. Who else would cause Peter to be truly shocked when his identity is revealed? Harry and Peter have been best friends in the Marvel universe for decades. Sure, this will be a fresh story that will be unrelated to any specific comics, or movies, but that doesn't mean they won't still play on established themes. With Norman's resources it isn't out of the question to think he could figure out Spider-Man's true identity. What better way to play mind games with your enemy than to use his best friend against him?
I hope we don't find out who this mystery villain is until we all have a chance to play on September 7th, but until then the speculation is a blast. I'm locking in my guess that Harry Osborn as the Green Goblin is the big reveal. What are your thoughts on who shows up to terrorize Spider-Man?
